Dick Gordon
Dick was a phenomenal Tennis player. Playing for Monroe High School, Richard Gordon was undefeated in four years, was the city champion as a sophomore,junior and senior seasons, and Sectional champion in both singles and doubles in his junior and senior years. Besides captaining the tennis team, Gordon who attended Monroe in the late 50s, also captained the Red Jackets’ varsity soccer and basketball teams.
In college at Ohio Wesleyan, where he played both tennis and soccer, Gordon won the NCAA MidEast small college doubles championships in both 1960 and 1962 and was the sinles champion in 1961. He is a member of the Ohio Wesleyan Hall of Fame.
Dich owned the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League from 1987 to 1992. The philanthropist has made numerous contributions to schools and colleges including a field house at Ohio Wesleyan, a nataorium at Connecticut College, squash courts at Brown University and the establishment of the Jay McGillis Scholarship at Boston College. His son, then a BC student, kicked the winning field goal a few years back, enabling the Eagles to upset Notre Dame at South Bend.
