Josh Lewin
Josh has become a nationally known figure.
When josh Lewin was six years old, he told his mom, Vicki, that he wanted to be a baseball announcer when he grew up. When Josh was 12, his mother thought that her son was then old enough to ride the bus from Brighton to Silver Stadium where he would sit by himself, broadcast the game on a tape recorder, then take it home and study his style and determine how he could improve.
At age 14, the Red Wings made him an intern, was given a seat in the press box and began writing brief accounts of the Red Wings games for the associated Press. Then at 16, he got on the air reporting scores of other games and doing play-by-play when one of the regular broadcasters was ill or unable to be there.
After graduating Brighton High School, he enrolled at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. Returning to Rochester after college, he was retained by the Red Wings as their lead play-by-play man. After four years, he accepted a sports broadcasting position in Baltimore, doing some occasional Orioles games. In 1996 he was hired by the Cubs to do play-by-play with the legendary Harry Caray and was retained by the Fox Network to do the Game of the Week on TV.
Next stop was Detroit where for four years he did the play-by-play on TV for the Tigers. Last year (2002) he moved on to the Texas Rangers as their TV man, the position he currently holds. Josh’s style of broadcasting, besides giving you the strike count and other routine information, takes you on the inside of baseball with stories about players, managers, coaches, owners, and everybody else in baseball.
Although he rapidly reached the top of his profession, Josh is still regular guy, walking his neighborhood with his eight year old daughter, collecting money for good causes, talking to fans in airports, and spending time with his family as often as he can.
Josh and his wife Dana also have a four year old son, Coby. They reside in a Dallas suburb.
