Elliott Curwin
Elliot, was a Boston native, who moved to Rochester in 1965 with his partner Marvin Miller to form the VP Supply Corp., a distributor of plumbing and heating products and air conditioning equipment.
A dedicated baseball fan from childhood, he was elected to the Red Wings board of directors in the 1980s, being elected the team’s president in 1990, holding that position until 1999.
Elliot will be remembered in particular for his key role in getting Frontier Field built and preserving professional baseball in Rochester. During his presidency, the Wings finished in the playoffs eight times. In 2001, he was named the founding president of the Genesee Country Village and Museum’s 19th Century Base Ball League that reenacts the game as it was played in the late 1800’s. The league is expected to become an important summer tourist attraction.
Curwin’s community positions have included memberships on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Group, the executive committee of the Rochester Home Builders and the board of the Jewish Community Center.
Elliot was a past president of the Brighton Little League Senior Division. He was also active in the Revival of Baseball in the Inner City, a youth baseball league supported by the Red Wings and Major League Baseball.
An athlete in his own right, Curwin played varsity basketball for Boston English and baseball for an army team in Germany. Elliot is enshrined in both the Red Wings Hall of Fame and the Brick Walk Hall of Fame at Frontier Field.
